Getting Started

Before you start make sure your dog isnt scared of the clicker make the click sound away from the dog.  If he runs away he isnt ready yet.
Make sure you have plenty of small soft treats, the must be quick to eat but small enough not to satisfy him too soon.

Step 1)  Charge the clicker
Press the clicker and give your dog a treat
Repeat atleast 20 times - some dogs may need more than this.

When your dog isnt paying attention click the clicker if he looks at you instantly expecting his treat you are ready for the next step.

Step 2)  Pick a command
When teaching the first command you want to pick something simple.  I suggest a hand target.  Rub a very smelly treat along your hand and show your dog, when his nose touches your hand C/R* <repeat a few times> Take a break clicker training is hard work for a newbie dog and they need time to take it all in.

NB: Most dogs learn this command extremely quickly as sniffing is a natural behaviour but some can take a while so be patient clicker training is about having fun.

After a break or maybe on another day repeat step 2.  Sniffing will soon turn to jabbing once your dog has realised what you want from him.  When the dog is consitantly touching your hand with his nose EVERY time it is offered you can add a cue word (i use touch).

Offer your hand - (dog touches with nose) say "TOUCH" - click and reward.  To start with you need to say the cue word as the dog is doing the command otherwise he will get confused.

Practise in the same area of the house for a few days then move on to another room.  Your dog may appear to be confused, this is because canines dont generalise well and need to be reminded

*C/R stands for Click and Reward
